Troop Family,
Although the year has just begun, it is time to start to consider a Boy Scout camp for your scout. This year, the Troop will be going to Bayport Scout Reservation located in Jamaica, VA from July 19-25, instead of Bashore Scout Reservation. Bayport is a 300 acre, riverfront Boy Scout campground having has 16 campsites, buildings with individual showers and bathroom areas, and a large swimming pool. See attached Bayport Reservation brochure for more details.
First Year Scouts
In case you are wondering whether a summer camp is right for your scout, the answer is “yes.” As a first year, your scout may have just crossed over to Boy Scouts, may be struggling to get signoffs, or may not have completed as many signoffs as he would have liked. Well, Bayport will help. It has the Nighthawk Program that is specifically designed for first year scouts. In this program, scouts spend their days working on Tenderfoot, Second, and First Class requirements, and by the time camp is over, they will receive over 40 signoffs across these three ranks. See page 31 for a full list of requirements that will earn. They will also have a chance to earn three merit badges. Not bad for a week’s work.
Seasoned Scouts
Yeah…Bayport is for you too. Bayport offers a wide variety of merit badges in a number of different areas. See pages 18-24 for a complete list. Bayport is known for offering hard to get merit badges like “Athletics,” “Sports,” and “Personal Fitness.” Older scouts can register for the High Adventure Programs. These are programs that allow older scouts to learn how to operate motorboats, fish off boats, or gain leadership and team building skills while climbing and repelling. See pages 25-26 for programs.
Fees
In short, Bayport is for all scouts. Bayport requires a deposit that is nonrefundable but can be transferred to another scout, if needed. There is also a Bayport camp fee. If paid before April 1, the fee is $300.00. After April 1 and before June 26, the fee is $320. The leader’s fee is $125 regardless of when paid. See pages 5-6 for Bayport’s refund policy. If financial assistance is needed, submit a campership application by Feb. 1. See page 35.
